Firefox on the way out?
0I was strolling along the web today when I stumbled onto this article from Business Insider. I’ve been hearing for a while now that Google Chrome’s share of the browser market had been going up, while Firefox had been falling. Now it sounds like there’s been an interesting shift in the browser wars.
The little Google search window you see at the top right corner of your Firefox browser is a paid product placement: For the past several years, Google has paid Mozilla something on the order of $1 per copy to have that window there. Last year, that Google search window accounted for 84% of Mozilla’s $123 million of revenue, or about $100 million.
The Google-Mozilla search deal ended in November. There has been no update about whether it has been renegotiated.
This gives me a bit of a sad.
Now, I have to say though, I am using Google Chrome these days. I was a devout Firefox user a few years back, but switched when I was noticing how much system resources Firefox was taking up, and how much lighter Chrome seemed to be.
Still, I always liked Firefox a hell of a lot better than Internet Explorer!
Now it’s starting to look like Firefox may actually go the way of the dodo. I doubt it’ll disappear entirely, but something’s gonna give, that much seems certain.
Farewell, you cuddly looking fox of fire.
Geek Toy of the Week – Galaxy Nexus / Ice Cream Sandwich
0
A twofer this time! Samsung and Google finally officially unveiled their Galaxy Nexus handset, which also means they’ve unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich, aka Android 4.0!
This thing looks gorgeous! 4.65 inch, 1280 x 720 screen, 1.2Ghz dual core processor, 7.2mm thin. I am drooling, just drooling.
Blackberry, oh Blackberry…
0Oh poor Blackberry. They just can’t seem to catch a break lately. All the issues with the Blackberry services going down, losing massive amounts of market share to iPhone and Android. It’s kinda sad.
I used to rock a Blackberry Curve. I was so happy to get my first smartphone and check out all the cool things I could do with this device that was so small. Of course, with how tech moves, I look back to that and think about how ancient that device was. A physical keyboard?! HAH!
Here’s the problem that I see with Blackberry. They really haven’t gotten beyond what they were back then. Where their competitors have been racing ahead, cramming new tech and flooding with apps and things to do, Blackberry has stayed more or less stagnant. Sure they’ve got apps, they’ve got a touchscreen phone, but it all feels like a half-hearted attempt at catchup.
3D…Phone?!

Ok, so maybe I’m way off base, but this is the first 3D phone I’ve ever seen. Say hi to the upcoming HTC EVO 3D. Yes, I’m especially interested because it’s an HTC EVO, of which I have the original. I likely won’t be getting this new one, simply because, well, money. I am not made of it. But hey, I can look and drool and jabber on about it like a middle school girl looking at a Bieber poster. Ok, maybe that’s a little much, but you get the idea.
So as usual, I found out about this, from good old engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/22/htc-evo-3d-and-evo-view-4g-tablet-spotted-on-sprints-website/
Specs for those too lazy to click links:
HTC EVO 3D
Platform: Android with HTC Sense Processor: Dual Core 1.2GHz Display: 4.3-inch, 960×540 3D Camera: Main: Dual 5 Megapixel with flash Front: 1.3 Megapixel Video: 1080p HD (2D), 720p (3D) Weight: 6.0 oz.
I’m really curious about the 3D elements of the phone. I would assume they’re using the same tech for the screen as the Nintendo 3DS, which I’ve heard some good things about. And the fact that it has a 3D camera, that is very interesting to me, especially since I just bought a 3D tv. I’m wondering just how good this camera is going to be. It is still a phone camera, and those are never super great quality. Only so much that can be squeezed in that small space. Still, I would imagine in good lighting, outdoors and such, this camera would do just fine and maybe get some cool 3D out of it.
How have the consumer 3D cameras been doing? Are they producing a good depth effect for people? Anyone have one, cause I don’t. I’ll be curious to see a comparison between this and something like the FujiFilm FinePix Real 3D W1.
Regardless of the 3D stuff, which is obviously the highlight of this phone, I’m drooling over that Dual Core 1.2GHz processor, I mean, holy crap! Power Overwhelming! </Protoss>
